The hair and beauty team have a Hair & Beauty Academy within the college which is mainly open during term-time at our City Road building, and a stand alone salon called the Design Academy which is open almost all year round.

The Design Academy

The Design Academy is a quarter of a million pound, four floor hair design and beauty salon on Castle Arcade in Cardiff's city centre, run by Coleg Glan Hafren students and teaching staff. Anyone can visit the Design Academy for a wide range of hair styling, waxing, tanning treatments, massage, holistic therapy, nailcare and make up, all at better prices than most other commercial salons, but with the same high standards, since we are a college-run enterprise.

All students working at The Design Academy are competent and supervised by a professional. You are also able to ask for a Level 2 or Level 3 student, if you would like to be served by someone who is further advanced in their studies. New clients are always welcome! The Design Academy enables our students to get the necessary work experience to qualify from their chosen hair and beauty course.

Design Academy facilities

We have an interactive powerpoint projector room in the basement, for student workshops and theory. The second floor is also a practical training workshop.

On the ground floor is the 18 seater, hi tech commercial hair salon, open to customers. The first floor holds the 6 couch beauty clinic for customers.

The Design Academy offers full disabled access, with a disabled lift and showers for the disabled

Rent a chair

On Saturdays, fully qualified stylists, whether they are graduates from Coleg Glan Hafren's hair & beauty courses or professionals from elsewhere, can rent a chair at the Design Academy to treat their clients.

One Afro-Caribbean hair styling specialist even works in London but appears at the Design Academy one Saturday each month.
