Adult Learners

Choices for Adult learners

Education at colleges like ours is about giving everyone a chance to learn new skills whatever their age, background and abilities.

If you're over 19 there are plenty of choices available to you and we'll do our very best to help you achieve your goals at our vibrant college.

Choice 1 - Need a new career or got spare time?

If you're retired, unemployed or in need of a new career there are plenty of full-time options available to adults, including A Levels in the day or evening and a host of vocational courses.

Are you now unemployed?

If you're over 18, receiving unemployment benefits and want to gain skills and knowledge in one of the following:

  • Auto Engineering
  • Engineering
  • Electrical Installation
  • Heating & Ventilation/Refrigeration
  • Administration

...then Training Solutions Wales can offer you a 13 week Skill Build programme where you can develop the necessary skills to help you back into work.

If you're unemployed and interested in Skill Build, contact Sofia Barakat or Laura Moulton on 02920 908014 or enquiries@trainingsolutionswales.org.uk

Choice 2 - Want to go to Uni but don't have the qualifications?

You could take a Return to Learn, Adult Foundation or Access course.

The Return to Learn and Adult Foundation courses replace the Open Door programme. These courses are for students with life experience who wish to return to learn. They give you an understanding of a range of topics, plus some literacy, numeracy and IT skills, and can be used as the first step back into education. You can use them to then move onto a variety of other courses, including Access courses.

Access to Higher Education courses are for those with life experience, but perhaps few qualifications, who wish to get back into education at Level 3, before moving onto higher education, and maybe a new career direction, after University.

Access courses include Access to Art & Design, Access to Business, Access to Life and Biological Science, Access to Nursing, Access to Social Welfare, Access to Law and plenty more.

There are also Foundation Degrees offered within the College, in Music and Film & Video, where you can study a two year course run in conjunction with local Universities, before choosing to go onto finish your degree at the university itself.

Choice 3 - Want to learn while you earn?

Many courses are offered on a part-time basis - please visit our course search page to filter the courses, or you could pick a work based assessment course.

Choice 4 - Want to take up a language or a hobby?

Take one of our short courses, OCN, GCSE or A Level languages, including Welsh for Adults.

Choice 5 - Don't want to come into college?

Study via a pc through Learndirect, or take a course at one of the Adult and Community Learning Centres throughout Cardiff.

If you study a Learndirect course, course materials are accessed on a computer that's connected to the Internet, so you can study at home, at work, or in one of our friendly Learning Centres or Open Access IT rooms - in fact anywhere you have internet access.

There are many courses to choose from - IT, English and Maths, Business & Management and ESOL.
