CELTA Teacher Training

The Cambridge ESOL CELTA course is an introductory course designed to enable participants to acquire essential subject knowledge and a range of practical skills for teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. It consists of approximately 160 contact hours, including 6 hours of assessed teaching practice, plus four written assignments, and follows the University of Cambridge ESOL approved CELTA syllabus.  

The content covers: 

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching/learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing
  • Lesson planning, resources and materials 
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

We run two part-time courses as follows:

CELTA Course 1

  • 21st September 2009 to 4th December 2009 with a one-week, half-term break in October
  • You will study for 16 hours a week on Mondays from 12.30 to 8.30pm and on Fridays from 9am to 5pm
  • Application deadline for CELTA Course 1 is 21st August 2009, with interviews taking place the week commencing 7th September 2009. 

CELTA Course 2 

  • 4th January 2010 to 11th June 2010 with a one-week, half-term break in February and in May and a two-week Easter break
  • You will study for 8 hours per week on Mondays from 5 to 8.30pm and on Fridays from 12.30 to 5pm
  • Application deadline for CELTA Course 2 is 30th October 2009, with interviews taking place the week commencing 16th November 2009.

Entry requirements:

  • Candidates should:
  • Be at least 18 years old. 20 plus is recommended
  • Have good language awareness and competence in both written and spoken English to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels
  • Have a level of education equivalent to level 3 or above, necessary for entry into higher education

Assessment:

  • Continuous assessment
