Advanced Studies
The Faculty of Advanced Studies at Coleg Glan Hafren offers a wide range of AS Level, A Level and GCSE courses. They can be studied full-time, part-time or as a fast track programme. Courses are run at the Trowbridge or City Centre Campus and at adult centres in Cardiff.
A Levels explained:
- AS [Advanced Subsidiary] Level – is a qualification in its own right. Think of it as the first half of an A Level.
- A2 Level is effectively the second half of an A Level, and a qualification in its own right.
- Therefore AS Level + A2 Level = Full A Level
Tips on Part-time study
We recommend that you study for a maximum of two evenings only.
In order to make sure that a GCSE or A level class is the right choice you will discuss enrolment with a subject lecturer during the enrolment period, or by coming along to the first class in September.
Most courses run from September to June with most exams in May and June. Some subjects may offer AS examinations in January.
Costs for part-time study are:
GCSE = £175 per subject
AS or A2 = £200 per subject
A Level = £300 per subject
Full-time study - Student Development Programme
As a Faculty our tutors recognise the importance of student support on an academic programme. To achieve this you will study a two-year Student Development Programme alongside your choice of AS/A Levels.
This programme will enable you to develop a range of key skills such as Communications; IT; Working with Others; Problem Solving; Application of Number and Improving own Learning.
You will also take part in community, enterprise, language and work-related activities which will enable you to ultimately claim the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification in your second year.
If achieved the Welsh Baccalaureate will earn you 120 UCAS points, equivalent to an A Grade A Level. This qualification is valued at University level as it will portray you as having a wider range of skills beyond those achievable through an academic pathway.
A Level - Right-track
Our A Level Right-track programme at the college is very successful, through great teaching, dedicated students and by ensuring that students are placed on the right course for their needs.
Whether you're coming to us full-time from school, are studying one or more courses as a Partnership school student, or are coming back to college as an adult learner to boost your grades, employment prospects or just pick up some knowledge, everyone is welcome at Coleg Glan Hafren.
We have the right course to suit you, whatever your grades.
